Dogs in Foster Homes

Yet animal shelters are filled with dogs and cats who must find homes. During the transition from ‘rescue’ to forever home, dogs require love and patience. Dogs in Distress rescue dogs and places them in temporary foster home, the best place for a dog to be cared for while waiting to be adopted. Through our fosterers, we really get to know our dogs and pups and learn which type of home they will be best suited to. So we can help adopters to find the right dogs for adoption to suit the new owners. The situation with cats is even worse, based on the countless number of them, and because their needs vary so greatly between domestic, feral and homeless-but-social cats.

We are passionate about our dogs, and we are lucky to have some wonderful foster carers who are extremely experienced with dogs. Our foster carers help our dogs by giving them a calm home, usually with other dogs , which helps our dogs to settle into home life. Our foster carers assess our dogs and work out what kind of home will best suit each individual dog in the future. Our foster carers help with crate, lead and house training and introduce our dogs to a multitude of situations to see how they react. This ensures that the future owners have a rounded picture of the dog from a person who really understands dogs and their needs.

Being in the shelter can be a really hard environment especially when they’ve been here for a long time. So kind of having that break gives them a little pep in their step again, makes them a little bit happier,” said Rippel. Right now the Humane Society of Scott County has about 330 cats and 100 dogs in their care. Shelter employees say the short-term stays are a way to give the dogs a break from shelter life and provide anyone feeling lonely with a furry companion.

It was a lifelong dream of Michael’s to help animals and in the 10 plus years he has been involved with Grateful Dogs Rescue he has fostered over 50 dogs and puppies. Michael has kindly opened his home to many pregnant dogs and provided a safe and comfortable place for them to have their pups. Then, after the puppies are born, Michael diligently looks after these precious little creatures, checking on them every 4 hours around the clock and tending to those who may need extra medical care. Because we are a foster-based rescue with no physical shelter, we only have the capacity to save as many dogs as we have foster parents. It’s not a job you can just take a break from so it does ease some of the work on our staff as well by having some of those animals in homes. It’s been like that for a little while unfortunately so we are really hoping we can ease things and take a bit of a break with this holiday foster program,” Rippel said. Often, the cats, dogs, kittens and puppies that have found shelter at Lake Norman Humane are sick, injured or have behavior issues and are at risk of euthanasia, according to an appeal for donations. Rehabilitating these dogs and cats is the core of what the group does, the appeal says. Puppies with parvo, kittens with upper respiratory infections, dogs with tumors and cats with broken limbs are just examples of the pets that we have helped heal and find homes. This means new foster families need to foster at least five dogs before being allowed to adopt.

I walk pretty well on leash but I do still get excited and pull if I see a cat or another dog. I’ve been an amazing learner in such a short time though, because now I know I get a TREAT if I check in with my person instead! Did I mention I LOVE TREATS - they are truly the way to my heart.
