Yet animal shelters are filled with dogs and cats who must find homes. During the transition from ‘rescue’ to forever home, dogs require love and patience. Through our fosterers, we really get to know our dogs and pups and learn which type of home they will be best suited to. So we can help adopters to find the right dogs for adoption to suit the new owners. The situation with cats is even worse, based on the countless number of them, and because their needs vary so greatly between domestic, feral and homeless-but-social cats.
We are passionate about our dogs, and we are lucky to have some wonderful foster carers who are extremely experienced with dogs. Our foster carers help our dogs by giving them a calm home, usually with other dogs , which helps our dogs to settle into home life. Our foster carers assess our dogs and work out what kind of home will best suit each individual dog in the future. Our foster carers help with crate, lead and house training and introduce our dogs to a multitude of situations to see how they react. This ensures that the future owners have a rounded picture of the dog from a person who really understands dogs and their needs.

All fostering is a labor of love, but it’s especially rewarding when you personally shape the course of an animal’s life. Many adopters are happy to send updates and photos, which fill our hearts with pride and joy. Our veterinary partner estimated that Beau was 2 years old at the time of intake in September 2021. Information will be provided to you at the time you pick up your first foster dog. You’ll receive contact info for our volunteer team, a foster informational packet, and any supplies you need. You can also keep in touch with the directors and other foster parents in the Facebook group, Reach Rescue Volunteers. It was a lifelong dream of Michael’s to help animals and in the 10 plus years he has been involved with Grateful Dogs Rescue he has fostered over 50 dogs and puppies. Michael has kindly opened his home to many pregnant dogs and provided a safe and comfortable place for them to have their pups. Then, after the puppies are born, Michael diligently looks after these precious little creatures, checking on them every 4 hours around the clock and tending to those who may need extra medical care. Because we are a foster-based rescue with no physical shelter, we only have the capacity to save as many dogs as we have foster parents. When you become a foster parent with Muddy Paws Rescue, you will personally be saving the life of a dog who might have otherwise not received a second chance. During the week, the foster parent is asked to care for the dog, provide medications if necessary, and report their observations when they return the pet to Oregon Dog Rescue.
It’s not a job you can just take a break from so it does ease some of the work on our staff as well by having some of those animals in homes. It’s been like that for a little while unfortunately so we are really hoping we can ease things and take a bit of a break with this holiday foster program,” Rippel said. Often, the cats, dogs, kittens and puppies that have found shelter at Lake Norman Humane are sick, injured or have behavior issues and are at risk of euthanasia, according to an appeal for donations. I walk pretty well on leash but I do still get excited and pull if I see a cat or another dog. I’ve been an amazing learner in such a short time though, because now I know I get a TREAT if I check in with my person instead! Did I mention I LOVE TREATS - they are truly the way to my heart.

Shelly, a beautiful Pittie, was rescued from Manhattan ACC where she had been brought in as a stray. Our veterinary partner estimates that Shelly was born in 2015. She had broken teeth and was emaciated at only 24 pounds!!
